Piano Lessons

 

Overview

Piano lessons are made up of core units and electives. Core units are compulsory for all students. Electives are available for students who enrol in longer lessons.

Core units

Students are required to study all core units in their regular piano lessons. Core units are designed to equip students with essential knowledge and skills to play the piano proficiently. All teaching activities are conducted in a professional and interactive way.

  • This unit covers an extensive range of musical repertoire in different music periods, styles, genres and cultures for each skill level. The aim is to provide students with opportunities to expand their horizons and build a strong foundation for effective music learning. Students will gain great confidence and develop a positive mindset for music.

  • A complete list of piano exercises will be introduced to help students develop reliable techniques. This unit consists of a series of classic piano studies in the piano literature. Students will acquire the proper techniques required to perform different styles of music. Students will complete various forms of scales and arpeggios in all 24 keys.

  • Sight-reading is an important skill for students to learn new music pieces in an efficient way. A good sight-reader will appreciate the ability to explore different music pieces freely. A complete set of sight-reading exercises is included in our syllabus to ensure that students will develop their sight-reading skills properly. Students will learn to anticipate music by reading the signs and hints hidden inside the language of music.

  • Aural training is an excellent way to develop greater musicianship. A variety of interactive activities will be introduced to help students experience the language of music aurally. Through identifying different musical elements by ear, students will play music without relying excessively on reading and memory. As a result, students will be able to perform complex music expressively and precisely.

  • In this unit, students will learn all the essential information about the music pieces that they are studying. It includes a detailed discussion of music titles, composers, distinctive musical features, music form, modulation, signs and terms. Students will also learn the brief history behind the music pieces that they are studying. The aim is to promote a better understanding and appreciation for music as a unique form of art.

  • This unit offers excellent opportunities for students to learn how music is written in a standard and logical way. From writing basic signs to complex polyphonic music, an extensive range of topics is covered to ensure that students will be able to think critically and systematically in music. Students are required to complete a series of music theory workbooks.

Electives

Electives are designed for students to gain specialised knowledge in different areas of music. The aim is to help students develop a better understanding and a deeper appreciation for music. Students can choose different electives in every academic year based on their interest.

  • This unit provides formal exam preparation for students who intend to sit for music exams held by Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB), Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and Trinity College London (TCL). According to the student’s skill level, an appropriate grade exam will be selected. This unit can also be tailored to HSC Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension. By completing this unit, students should be eligible for exam enrolments.

  • The learning objective of this unit is to prepare students for giving a piano recital. Students will learn to organise a repertoire list, perform pieces securely and overcome anxiety in front of an audience. Also, students will learn how to research and write program notes. At the completion of this unit, students should gain a good understanding of how to present a professional piano recital.

  • Students will learn how music is constructed through composing music. In this unit, students will choose the theme, structure, style, harmony and melody to create a personalised music piece. Upon completion of this unit, students should gain experience to write new music and a new perspective to view music from a composer’s standpoint.

  • Improvisation is an excellent way to gain confidence in music. Students will explore the endless possibilities of music by expressing themselves through improvisation. Students will learn to think actively, critically and musically to truly express themselves. This unit paves the way for students to establish their own musical style.

  • In this unit, students will play music with other musicians. It is an excellent way to develop a greater awareness of timing and rhythm. Students will learn to listen to themselves and other musicians simultaneously. Such an experience will bring an additional level of satisfaction and enjoyment to any music students.

  • A set of singing method books is selected to help students develop basic singing skills. Students will learn to sing in pitch through a variety of exercises and pieces. In this way, students will develop an accurate inner voice, which is essential for aural training and music performance.

  • This unit focuses on putting music theory into practice. Students will experiment and apply different musical concepts to their playing to improve their understanding of music. As a result, students will be able to learn similar music pieces collectively, which greatly enhances the effectiveness of their piano lessons.

  • Through studying music history, students will understand the unique features and characteristics in different music periods. Students will be inspired and develop a deep appreciation for music by reading the life of celebrated composers. In addition, students will study the history behind the music they are learning and therefore are able to express the appropriate style accurately.

  • This unit covers the history of Australian music from pre-1945 to 2000s. Students will study the significant events, cultures, composers, themes, and styles that have major influences on the development of Australian music. A list of important works by Australian composers in each decade is included in the syllabus. Students will learn to play and perform Australian music pieces according to their skill level.

  • Students will learn the necessary steps to write polyphonic music. A detailed discussion and explanation of how different voices (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) are interconnected is included in this unit. By studying this elective, students will be able to trace classical and modern music back to its original form.
